Independence Pioneer Village
Red Murray Cabin
Red Murray Cabin
This is the only modern cabin in the village. In 2007, we were given 10 trees from the city of Oakland. We cut down the tees and turned them into cabin logs used in the walls, rafters, and sills. The structure was erected and completed in 2008. This cabin is unique from the others, as its interior walls are paneled with narrow boards covering the chinking. It was named after Melvin “Red” Murray, a retired police officer from Villa Grove who lived his last years here on the property in the Sunshine Estates Christian Retirement apartments and took care of the mowing and helping with various prospects in the village.
